Assertive Communication



Generally the three basic ways for people to communicate in any given situation are:

  1. Passive
  2. Aggressive
  3. Assertive

Assertive communication is behavior that allows you to:

  • Express your feelings comfortably.

  • Be direct and straightforward.

  • Exercise personal rights without denying the rights of others or experiencing undue anxiety or guilt.

You will learn how to:

  1. Identify passive, aggressive, and assertive behavior.

  2. Identify areas in which you have difficulty being assertive.

  3. Express yourself assertively in situations where you:

    - Set limits on how others treat you.
    - Give and receive compliments.
    - Deal with criticism.
    - Start and maintain conversations.
    - Handle putdowns.
    - Deal with anger.
    - Assert yourself in the working world.
