Developing Negotiating Skills



Any time two or more people meet to make a decision affecting each of them, some form of negotiation takes place.

We all negotiate every day and spend a great deal of our time trying to reach agreement with others.

Negotiation is a problem-solving process that involves exchanging ideas to reach an agreement acceptable to all parties.

Skilled negotiators solve complicated situations with minimum stress and maximum support.

You will learn how to:

  1. Understand and break through barriers to effective communication.

  2. Present your ideas and express your viewpoint effectively.

  3. Listen so that others are satisfied that you understand their point of view.

  4. Read and use verbal and nonverbal cues.

  5. Resolve conflict without destroying relationships.

  6. Allow all parties involved in a negotiation to state their feelings and opinions fully in an atmosphere of respect, understanding, caring, and fairness.

  7. Work together to achieve understanding and create options that will satisfy all parties.
